(2010) Directed by Chofo Espinosa Paco is a quiet man that travels from Guatemala City to the country's second largets city, Xela. He wants to bounce some ideas off the only person in whom he trusts, his uncle Juancho, who passed away 15 years ago. On the way there, he meets Willy, who has recently lost his job and it is willing to take out his anger on his &lquo;new friend.&rquo; Pointing his gun to his back, Willy walks Paco around Xela. Paco will try to escape and Willy will spend the afternoon looking for the courage to pull the trigger. Paco es un hombre tranquilo que viaja desde la capital de Guatemala para poner en orden sus ideas con la ayuda de la única persona en la que confía: su tío Juancho, enterrado desde hace quince años en el cementerio de Xela (la ciudad principal después de la capital guatemalteca). The Railroad All Stars
(2006) Directed by Chema Rodríguez and Andrés Zepeda Vilma, Valeria and Mercy, like their companions, dream of being treated with dignity. They are prostitutes who charge less than $2 for their services and work at The Line, an area where the railroad passes through the Guatemalan capital. In order to draw attention to their problems which include harassment from the police and delinquents, they decide to form a soccer team, for which they train for several weeks. Then they sign up for a local tournament, but are later expulsed for being prostitutes. This expulsion generates fiery controversies, between rejection and support, that transform these women overnight. Vilma, Valeria y Mercy al igual que sus compañeras sueñan con ser tratadas con dignidad. Ellas son prostitutas, cobran menos de $2 por servicio y trabajan en La línea, un área en donde pasa el ferrocarril que atraviesa la capital guatemalteca. Para llamar la atención sobre sus problemas sobre el acoso de la policía y delincuentes deciden formar un equipo de fútbol, para ello entrenan por varias semanas. Luego se inscriben en un torneo local del que luego son expulsadas por ser prostitutas. Esta expulsión genera en el país encendidas controversias, entre rechazos y apoyos que transforman a estas mujeres de la noche a la mañana. Monsignor Juan José Gerardi
(2010) Directed by Odhag, Moralejas Film Bishop Juan José Gerardi devotes his time and work on behalf of the most vulnerable community in Guatemala. Between the seventies and nineties, he acts as a priest in the areas that suffered most during the internal Guatemalan War. Upon arriving in Guatemala, he establishes the Archdiocese's Human Rights Office in which the main project was the recovery of the historic memory, a document which describes the atrocities that the Guatemalan village fell victim to at the hands of the military and guerilla forces. His work puts his life in danger. El Obispo Juan José Gerardi dedica su tiempo y trabajo a favor de la comunidad más desprotegida de Guatemala. Se desempeña como sacerdote en los lugares donde más se sufrió la guerra interna de Guatemala entre los años setenta a noventa. Al llegar a Guatemala funda la Oficina de Derechos Humanos del Arzobispado en la que su principal proyecto fue la Recuperación de la memoria histórica un documento que describe las atrocidades que fue víctima el pueblo guatemalteca en manos de las fuerzas militares y la guerrilla. Marimbas from Hell
(2010) Directed by Julio Hernández Don Alfonso, is a folklore musician who plays the marimba. He has made a living from playing this instrument all his life. However, he faces a financial crisis owing to the fact that playing music is no longer profitable. Blacko has similar problems, but different in that he was a pioneer of heavy metal, he converted from Satanism to Christianity and from there to orthodox Judaism. He currently works in a hospital, always with the same financial difficulties. The only thing that seems to unite the two is the love for music. And as unlikely as it sounds, that passion unites them when, at the request of the third character of this story, a rascal nicknamed Chiquitín, they form the first ?metal/marimba? band in history. Don Alfonso, es un músico folclórico que interpreta la marimba. Ha vivido de tocar este instrumento durante toda su vida, sin embargo atraviesa una crisis financiera por lo que ya no le es rentable continuar tocando música. Blacko tiene problemas parecidos pero diferentes: fue pionero del heavy metal, pasó del satanismo al cristianismo y de ahí a la ortodoxia judía, y ahora trabaja en un hospital, siempre con las mismas estrecheces económicas. Lo único que parece unir a los dos es el amor a la música. Y, por improbable que suene, esa pasión los une cuando, a instancias del tercer personaje de esta historia, un pilluelo apodado Chiquilín, forman la primera banda de ?metal/marimba? de la historia. Un hombre mayor es propietario de una tienda y vive peleando con su televisor ya que no le ofrece una señal óptima. En otro lado de la ciudad, una mujer de clase media alta se mantiene estresada por su vida social, mientras en otro lugar dos amigos buscan una dirección y atraviesan varios obstáculos para encontrar el domicilio. Sin embargo en el desarrollo de la trama accidentalmente se reúnen en la tienda, posteriormente son reprimidos por el propietario de la tienda que ante su frustración de no poder ver televisión la ensaña en contra de las tres personas y emprende una persecución peculiar. This funny short film tells three simultaneous stories. An older man, who owns a store, spends his days fighting with his tv that no longer works properly. On the opposite side of the city, an upper class woman fills her days with the stress of a busy social life. Somewhere else, two friends search for an address and face several obstacles trying to find it. Accidentally, the three characters end up at the old man's store, where the old man takes out his frustration for not being able to watch tv on them, and starts a peculiar chase. Trasfondos muestra la cruel realidad del ser humano, la corrupción, el crimen, la precaria sitaución económica en que viven los países de América Latina y las injustas condiciones de vida. Centrada en dos jóvenes amigos que son víctimas de un secuestro en Guatemala, la tierra de la impunidad, en la que la nueva generación presionada y cansada se revela de sentir miedo para pedir justicia. But from the VIP section, his enemies concoct vengeful plans with the aim of making Juan?s stay the shortest and most violent possible. Juan Ramos, Sub-Contralor General de la Nación, es arrestado e ingresado a prisión preventiva, mientras prueba su inocencia por cargos de corrupción y asesinato. Aunque ha pagado por estar en el sector VIP, es llevado al peor sector de la cárcel.
